"  Sounds of Grace"
These five verses tell us so much about the heart of our Lord during His earthly
ministry.   Levi, or Matthew as he is also known, was a member of the despised
publicans.  A man concerned about his standing among the Jews would never be seen
with one of these men.  And yet Jesus called out to Matthew and this wicked, selfish
publican followed him.    Later Matthew invited Jesus to his home for dinner and gave
the opportunity for his publican friends to meet the Savior.   The Pharisees, always
looking for a way to accuse Jesus of sin, condemned Jesus for His association with this
wicked crowd.   But the Savior rejoiced to reach out to this sinful and needy group of
men with His message of hope.    He did not discriminate.   He loved.   The believer
today can read this scripture with joy for, like Matthew, we also were sinful outcasts
until the Great Physician found us.   But more than being a blessing to us, this lesson
should be an encouragement for us to reach out to the sinners around us with the same
gospel Jesus preached.

1)   Why were the publicans so hated?

2)   How did the Pharisees deal with publicans and sinners?

3)   How did Jesus look upon publicans and sinners?

4)   Why did it bother the Scribes and Pharisees that Jesus was surrounded by sinners?

5)   As Jesus defends Himself against the Scribes and Pharisees in Matthew 9, He
quotes from the book of Hosea saying, “I will have mercy and not sacrifice.”  What
does this mean?

6)   Who is the righteous and who is the sinner Jesus speaks of in verse 17?

7)    Why does this statement by Jesus give great hope to the believer?

8)    In what way should we follow the example of Christ in our ministry?
