In the last lesson, we discussed the disciple’s failure to cast out an evil spirit. In
this one we see the disciples arguing concerning who would be the greatest in Christ’s
Kingdom. This is despite the fact that Jesus just told them that he was going to be
delivered to be killed and then he would rise on the third day. While you study this
portion of scripture, ask yourself if you miss truths that Jesus may have for you
because you are too distracted by what you think you should receive. How do you view
others, is it as a child like Jesus states, or do you give place to those that might look
better to you?
1. Why did Jesus want no man to know he was passing through Galilee?
2. Why were the disciples afraid to ask Jesus what he meant? Did the rebuke of Peter
in chapter 8 have anything to do with it?
3. Jesus said “is delivered”. Why did he say “is”? Who delivered him into the hands
of men? How does this statement coincide with the final statement in verse 37 about
who sent Christ? Is. 53:10, Jn. 18:1-12
4. Jesus asked the disciples what they were disputing about, but they did not answer,
why not?
5. What does the fact that Jesus did not press his question say about our Lord? (hint:
longsuffering and compassion) 1 Pet. 3:20, Ex. 34:6
6. Again showing his compassion, Jesus does not rebuke the disciples for their
disputation directly, but does so indirectly. What did he mean by saying the greatest
had to be a servant of all?
7. Think and compare the parodoxes that Jesus gives his disciples: here he says that
if any man wanted to be first, he had to be last and servant of all. In Chapter 8 he tells
them that whoever wanted to save his life they must lose it for Christ’s sake. How can
we fulfill these statements?
8. Jesus tells the disciples that they need to receive Christ, what did he mean? What
does receiving someone as a child mean? Mk 6:7-13, James 2:1-9, 1 Cor. 12:12-13:1
9. Jesus taught his disciples here the Transitive Principle of Knowing God. How does
this principle work? How does it fit with being a servant of all? What does the child in
the midst of them have to do with it? (hint: in Aramaic-the language they were
speaking-child and servant are the same word) Jn. 10:15, 30, 16:26-28, 17:20-26
10. Jesus speaks here about being killed at the hands of men as he did of being
rejected by the elders, chief priests and scribes in ch. 8. Contrast that idea of rejection
with the concept of receiving that Jesus proclaims in v 37 and how open it is to all.
