"  Sounds of Grace"
As we said in the previous lessons, Jesus has now revealed to his disciples the
purpose behind his coming.  Although the disciples do not understand what Jesus
means, he leads them in to the next train of thought.  If they are to be followers of him,
they must also follow his physical path.  Jesus introduces therefore the idea of bearing
your cross as a disciple of Jesus.  Jesus then takes three of his disciples into a high
mountain and reveals his glory to them.  As we study his transfiguration we are awed
by his glory, but we must be diligent to see the purpose behind it.  As you read the text
and think on the questions below, consider what the overall goal that Jesus has in mind
is.  How does it fit into the context of the passages we have been studying?

1.  Why does Jesus take only these three disciples with him?

2.  What does transfigured mean? Jn 1:14

3.  Why do Moses and Elijah appear to Christ here?  Ex. 31:18, 1 Kings 19:9, Mt. 5:17

4.  What were the three of them discussing?  In the overall context of these passages
and the difficulties that the disciples were having in understanding Jesus as the
Messiah as well as suffering, why is this significant?  Luke 9:31

5.  Why does Peter speak up?  V6

6.  What did Peter mean when he asked about making tabernacles for them?  Ex 23:16,
Lev 23:34-43

7.  Is there any significance to Mark mentioning six days between the previous
discussion and the transfiguration?  Lev 23:34-43, Ex 24:16ff

8.  Should Peter have spoken?  Was there a problem with what he asked?

9.  Why did a cloud overshadow the disciples?  (Ezekiel was the last person to see this
cloud almost 600 years before this)  Ex 13:21, 24:16, 33:18-23, 40:35, Ps 29:5

10.  Contrast Peter’s words and his desire for action with the words spoken by the
Father.  Heb 1:1-2

11.  What words were disciples struggling with that elicited such a statement by the
Father?  Mark 8:31

12.  This statement by the Father fulfills prophecy given in Deut. 18:15, why is this
important?

13.  Consider Jesus’ rebuke of Peter and the Lord bringing him along to the
transfiguration.  What was Jesus teaching Peter?

14.  Did the disciples see the true Jesus?  Will we experience the same thing?  V10, 1
Thess. 4:17-18

15.  Why does Jesus tell the disciples to wait until he rises from the dead before
speaking to anyone concerning the transfiguration?  Did they listen?

16.  Why was there confusion in the disciple’s minds concerning John and Elijah?
Hadn’t they heard Jesus speak of John in such a way before?  Mal. 3:1, 4:4-6

17.  Is there any reference to Elijah suffering as the forerunner to the Messiah listed
in the Old Testament?

18.  What do v11-13 say about John the Baptist?

19.  There is a curse mentioned in Malachi 4:6.  Was John successful in his ministry
listed in Malachi 4?  Was this curse inflicted upon Israel as a nation?  Mark 13
