The first significant event of the book of Mark is the Baptism of Christ. John is at the
Jordan River baptizing repentant sinners when the sinless Son of God arrives and
requests to be baptized. John at first is overwhelmed at the thought of baptizing his
Lord but he obeys. As Jesus comes up out of the water a voice speaks from Heaven
“Thou art my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased” and the Spirit descended upon
him in the form of a dove. This event is rarely written about or preached on and yet it
is an amazing and wonderful part of the gospels. It is so important that all four
gospels have a record it – remember only two of the gospels record the birth of Jesus.
If God in His Word put such emphasis upon this, shouldn’t we? Let us consider in
this lesson what Jesus’ baptism has to teach us about Him and our church ordinance of
baptism today.
Scripture reading: Matthew 3:13-17; Luke 3:21-23; John 1:29-34; John 8:12-18; John
10:15-18; II Corinthians 5:14-21; I Peter 3:18-22
1) Was John’s baptism different than our baptism today?
2) Why did John not seek to baptize Jesus at first?
3) What is the meaning of Jesus’ response to John in Matthew 3:15?
4) What did Jesus’ baptism symbolize?
5) What does the Father’s words and Spirit’s appearance say about Jesus?
6) What comfort does this give to the believer today?
7) What does the testimony of Jesus’ baptism teach us about our baptism?
